Japan Philharmonic Orchestra was the first of its kind in Japan, founded in June 1956 by the late Ayao Watanabe. The orchestra performs under the direction of a distinguished lineup of conductors: Principal Conductor Pietari Inkinen, Principal Guest Conductor Karthun Wong (Chief Conductor from September 2023), Laureate Conductor and Artistic Advisor Alexander Lazarev, Laureate Honorary Conductor Kenichiro Kobayashi, and Friend of the JPO (Artistic Advisor) Junichi Hirokami. In April 2011, the orchestra launched the “Music for Disaster Areas” program to deliver music to regions struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and as of 2022, the program has performed at more than 320 occasions. Their activities have been highly acclaimed, and in 2022, the group was awarded the 16th Shinpei Goto Award. While valuing the foundations of “warmth” and “closeness to people,” the group aims to engage the various powers of music in society for all people, generations, and regions. They appear on BS Asahi's Welcome Classic every Wednesday from 10:54-11:00pm.
