Artist Tom Sachs is known for his collaborations with international brands such as Prada and Nike, as well as his participation in “The Universe and Art exhibition” at Mori Art Museum. This show is organized in correspondence to the current exhibition, “Tom Sachs: Tea Ceremony” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (~until June 23, 2019), which had gained much acclaim for its previous presentation across museums in the United States starting with The Noguchi Museum in New York.
Reinterpreting the spirit and values of “chanoyu” as an essential spiritual activity in the context of 21st century space travel, Sachs’ has created various tea utensils through the use of industrial materials and familiar everyday objects, such as his “Cha-ire” (2018) that incorporates a battery by Japanese electronic power tools manufacturer, Makita Corporation. Featured on this occasion are 28 works from Tom Sachs’ “Tea Ceremony” that are either new or have never before been presented in Japan, introducing unique ideas and perspectives that serve to explore the significance and potential development of traditional Japanese culture.
