3.11 and the Future from Diverse Viewpoints

Roppongi Art Night 2011, scheduled for March 26-27, 2011, had to be abandoned in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake. The impact of the disaster was massive. People involved in art had to confront the difficult question of what could be done through art to make a real difference. That process still continues today. We have gathered together attempts by artists to convey the real viewpoints of the areas directly hit by the disaster, or to address issues that became apparent through relief work and their work to support the reconstruction. Through them, we hope to look into the future.

HIBINO Katsuhiko "Tohoku koyomi no yobune"

Each year on the day of the winter solstice, large bamboo and paper lanterns in the shapes of numbers to represent the months are paraded on boats on the Nagara River in Gifu prefecture. In this "Koyomi no Yobune" event, the passage of time coincides with the flow of the river. People are reminded of the year gone by and think ahead to the new year as the days begin to get longer again. The event has recently toured to the rivers and seas of Tohoku, creating a time to remember the past and think of the future, reflecting in the water. In November 2011, it was held on the Old Kitakami River in Ishimaki (Miyagi), followed by Otsuchi Bay in Otsuchi (Iwate) on March 11, 2012. Now, the lantern boats are paying a visit to Roppongi Art Night to pick up the thoughts of Tokyo people before returning to the Kasshigawa River at Kamaishi (Iwate) for the next event on March 31. Join Hibino Katsuhiko to put your thoughts onto colored washi paper and use the paper to create boats. (The number of places in the workshop is limited.)

HIBINO Katsuhiko’s “Heart Mark Viewing”

Based on a desire to ensure give people hit by the disaster a heart-warming touch for their everyday environments, this project involves making heart-mark art and encouraging interaction. The workshop is for both children and adults. Participants use recycled fabric to create hearts that carry their thoughts and feelings, then stick their heart onto a larger piece of fabric to create a mini-flag. The mini-flags made by workshop participants are then joined together to make a tapestry that communicates their care for the people in the disaster area. Everyone is welcome to join in the workshop. However please understand that we may run out of places. Entry to the workshop is otherwise unrestricted, but elementary school and younger children need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Record of coastal Iandscape

Fujii Hikaru based himself in the city of Sendai for long periods since the Tohoku earthquake, traveling out along the Tohoku coast to record the area on video. To make these recordings he used three cameras operating simultaneously. The copyright of the resulting videos now belongs to Sendai City and to other local authorities and entities affected by or involved in the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, but the artist was granted a license to use the work in any form.
