Meet Jappy at the "MATSURI" and Get a Charge of Genki!

Large-scale installation project makes art a total experience!

Tokyo Midtown is the stage for this large-scale installation project created by the Kyoto-based duo of artists known as Antenna. “Jappy”, an original character created to make a “Japan Happy”, is the central motif of a performance project that draws on elements of the traditional Japanese matsuri (festival) including a portable shrine and a shrine hall. Here in Tokyo Midtown in the heart of global city of Tokyo, this contemporary matsuri serves as gateway to a new era, engaging and energizing all who see it and inviting them to turn their eyes to the exciting potential of this town in Japan.

From in 2002 by two artists based in Kyoto, Antenna uses a broad palette of media in pursuit of creative activities inspired by Japanese history and culture. With their original character JAPPY as a motif, they use art to call attention to ordinary things that Japanese have come to take for granted, and pose questions about their immanent truth, value and happiness.

A preview of Antenna's latest video, Legend of Roppongi has been released. The full video will be launched in Tokyo Midtown on March 24, the same day as Roppongi Art Night.

Legend of Roppongi is a work of fiction created based on careful research into the historical facts and legends of Roppongi. The hero of the story is Jappy, a mascot character aimed at making Japan happy, who is conspicuous in all of Antenna's works. The story encourages viewers to think more deeply about how, despite facing and overcoming a great many problems, including disasters, hunger, disease, and war, the people have succeeded in passing the spark of life down the generations to the present day. (Description based on Antenna's Youtube channel).
