Another part of Nishio‘s three-part “The Body in Connection Project,” in People’s House: Skirt, the fabric from old clothing collected from around Roppongi and other places was turned into patchwork to create an installation that look likes a huge skirt. A symbol for “the body,” the skirt will become a large “costume” that brings color to the Roppongi Art Night, and a “house” in which people will gather, inside of which a number of programs will be on offer.

We will play a game, on a life-size board, that shows what it takes to create the ideal city. It is about imagination, creation and trade ̶ as movement. No city can exist without the exchange of ideas, hopes and emotions. But no exchange can happen without the inhabitants. They make the city move.
For this workshop we will guide participants in creating their imagined city, through trade. Together we will build the ideal Roppongi.

Large cardboard blocks representing the functions of a city such as offices, shops and parks appear on the Green Plaza! Inspiration is the origin of creation. This work is a visual representation of a collision of inspiration in which “flashes of inspiration” are brought into being using LEDs. These lights emerge from the movement of people, and in that moment, fly around 66 Plaza at a speed of 100km/h or more. The lights become even brighter when they collide with each other, symbolizing the birth of something new.

“When an object that is rather large and cumbersome is brought into a small space, the weight and the shape of the object appear to be controlling the body that is carrying the object. In that sense, the object could be described as a drama that has materialized. You could also say that the person carrying the object is an actor and make a strong argument that, therefore, this is a piece of theatre.”

Eyes dancing in the air, branches transparent in space. An installation in which paper leaves, carrying the image of an open eye on one side and a closed eye on the other, appear to blink their eyes as they fall through the air. When viewers collect the fallen leaves and insert them into the tube, they are blown six meters into the air, and then come fluttering down.

Eicon / Safety Last reproduces the kind of slapstick that was filmed using a hand-cranked camera at the dawn of the age of movies, filming it with a high-speed modern camera in order to verify the nature of the relationship between the physical body as expressed in moving images, and the camera. The costumes used for the shoot are items from fashion stores within Roppongi Hills and can be seen at each of the stores in question.

An interactive art machine created by Hachiya that swaps what one person is seeing with what another person is seeing. The purpose of the machine was to blur the boundaries between identities using a device which, when the head-mounted display is worn, limits the wearer to seeing things only from the perspective of the other wearer, thereby being forced to stand in that person’s position.

As a place to observe the courtship behavior (display) of birds, for example, a pond is an outdoor installation in which the nature of landscape itself accentuates its own attributes. By changing the pattern on the bottom of the pond to bright stripes, the patterns react to the movement on the surface of the water, making the pond seem for all the world like a living creature.

Warhol’s 1974 solo exhibition at the Daimaru Department Store in Tokyo and Kobe brought him attention in Japan. In 1983, he produced his Kiku series on the motif of chrysanthemums, a traditional symbolic flower in Japan. Three art professionals who were directly involved with Warhol’s exhibitions in Japan or the creation of the Kiku series, will relate untold stories of the making of the Kiku series and Warhol’s reception in Japan.
