The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka Collection
The Eternal Beauty and Luster of Oriental Ceramics

The Museum now boasts Japan’s largest most comprehensive, and highest quality collection of oriental ceramics, focusing principally on Chinese and Korean ceramics. To celebrate the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka’s 30th anniversary in 2012, this exhibition presents 140 oriental ceramics carefully selected from the approximately 4,000 items in the collection, including both of its national treasures and all thirteen of its important cultural properties. To the Japanese people, Chinese and Korean ceramics are the most familiar foreign ceramics from ancient times, and they have long exerted a major influence on Japanese ceramics. From well-known masterpieces to rare gems made public for the first time in many years, this exhibition displays the beauty of oriental ceramics for all to discover.

Live Tsugaru Shamisen "ABEYA Roppongi Artnight Special!"

Traditional Japanese music performed live by Tsugaru-style shamisen folk music unit “Abeya” and folk singer Maya Nemoto! Enjoy the passion of a new generation of talent!

■Performing: Abeya: Kinzburo Abe & Ginzaburo Abe (Tsugaru shamisen), Nemoto Maya (vocals)
■Entry: Free of charge (Museum admission required)
*Booking not required. Seats are not reservable. Tickets to reserve a place in the queue are given out at 10:00 a.m. on the day of performance.

ABEYA
KINZABURO ABE (Elder Brother)
Born in Tokyo in 1984. He began serious study of the shamisen from the age of 10 under his father Hidesaburo Abe, and has appeared in the All Japan Tsugaru Shamisen Concours since 1999, placing second in the junior class and later from 2002 to 2004, and placing second in the adult class. He finally was crowned champion in 2005. His also a member of the Shamisen orchestra KAZA and performs with the Japanese drum “Za Ondekoza” group. In Japan, he is recognized as one of its greatest Tsugaru Shamisen players.

GINZABURO ABE (Younger Brother)
Born in Tokyo in 1987. Since he was an infant, his older brother has always been his biggest influence. With his older brother as his model and rival, he continues to hone his mastery of the shamisen. Now in his twenties, he has developed his own distinctive style. In 2002, he competed in the junior junior of the Tsugaru Shamisen National Competition and received an award of excellence, and then placed second for 5 consecutive years in the adult class, finally winning the championship in April 2010. Today he is increasingly in the spotlight as a top-class Tsugaru shamisen player.
MAYA NEMOTO
Born in Chiba in 1983. At age 11, she began serious study of both minyo (traditional Japanese folk) songs and the tsugaru shamisen. She has enjoyed a brilliant career, winning the Minyo Grand Prix for Boys and Girls in 1995, and subsequently entering and winning the Minyo Concours sponsored by the Kyodo Minyo Association a total of 15 times in a row. She was also presented with an Award of Excellence at the NHK Minyo Young Festival. As a tsugaru shamisen player, she has earned many accolades including the championship at the All-Japan Tsugaru Shamisen Concours in the Ladies Division in Osaka in 2005. She made her debut as a professional minyo singer in 2007.

Curators Talk : Insider Look at Exhibition Highlights

The exhibition curators talk about the works in the current exhibition: "The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka Collection: The Eternal Beauty and Luster of Oriental Ceramics." A chance to learn about some of the oriental ceramics that have enchanted people over the ages.

Exhibition Commentary Everyone from Kids to Adults Can Enjoy!
