Eiichiro Sakata and Takehiko Kamei's Talk "Surprise of New York"

Photographer Sakata Eiichi moved to the United States in 1966 and studied under Richard Avedon, which provided the opportunity to meet Irving Penn. Another encounter in New York that has survived to the present day is that with artist Kamei Takehiko (Genki Anima). They will talk about topics that include some contemporary episodes and mention of photographs that Sakata took in that period. They will also discuss the way that creation was drawn out of surprises, and about the effects of encounters with many different sorts of people and the period being one of change, and about the positive mental energy nurtured in that environment.

Michel Crowford's Talk "30 Years as a New Yorker Cartoonist"

Michael Crawford, who drew original drawings for the animation produced for the current exhibition, will be visiting from New York. For 30 years, Crawford has been a contributing cartoonist to prestigious The New Yorker Magazine, a weekly journal revered for almost 90 years for distinguished literature and journalism. He drew an Issey Miyake clothing-themed cartoon for the magazine in 1995, which eventually led to his participation in this exhibition. Crawford will be talking about the funny life of a cartoonist at The New Yorker, the drawings featured in the exhibition, and the creative process behind them.

'I grew up wanting to play professional baseball, but cartooning eventually appealed to me because it was a chance, drawing and painting, to make people laugh without leaving the house; a job that let me work nights, sleep late and would never require me to appear in front of an audience in Tokyo (or anywhere!)'—Michael Crawford
